Victoria Faces a Fiery Nightmare: Catastrophic Bushfires Rage On
Welcome to our live coverage of a day that has Victorians on edge. As I write this, the state is bracing for what could be one of the most devastating bushfire days in recent memory. But here's where it gets even more alarming: the Longwood and Thologolong fires continue to burn uncontrolled, forcing evacuations and putting lives at risk.
Isabel McMillan here, bringing you the latest on this unfolding crisis.
The Situation is Dire:
Mass Evacuations: Residents across northern Victoria are being urged to flee immediately. The Longwood fire, in particular, poses an imminent threat, with authorities warning of catastrophic conditions.
Total Fire Ban: The entire state is under a total fire ban, with the Wimmera, South West, Northern Country, and North Central regions facing the highest level of danger. This isn't just about property damage; lives are on the line. If a fire takes hold, the consequences could be tragic.
National Parks Closed: Popular destinations like the Grampians, Otways, and sections of the Murray and Goulburn Rivers are off-limits. Even the iconic Great Ocean Road is partially closed, and the Mountain to Surf race near Lorne has been cancelled.
Transport Disruptions: V/Line has cancelled train services on nine regional lines and numerous coach services. And this is the part most people miss: even coach services passing through high-risk areas, even if only partially, are suspended. Extreme heat timetables are in place for Ballarat and Geelong lines.
Ambulance Services Affected: Ambulance Victoria is urging residents in high-risk areas to seek alternative care options as paramedics are being relocated for their safety.
Interstate Aid: Dozens of firefighters from New South Wales are joining the fight, a testament to the severity of the situation.
Road Closures and Evacuation Zones:
Longwood Fire:
- Closed Roads: Hume Freeway (Violet Town to Seymour), Campbell St & Cliftons Streets (Euroa), Faithfull Rd & Hume Fwy, Tarcombe Rd & Hume Fwy, Maroondah Hwy (Yea to Maindample).
Walwa Fire:
- Closed Roads: Murray Valley Highway (Granya Road to Annandale Road, Lucyvale Road to Cudgewa Valley Road - local traffic only), Murray Valley Highway (Annandale Road to Lucyvale Road, Shelley Road, Murray River Road - emergency vehicles only). Important: Access to Albury/Wodonga from Corryong is still possible via NSW roads at Tintaldra, Towong, and Bringenbrong. Avoid the Jingellic river crossing.
