The iconic C W Sellors, a family-run jewelry business, has entered administration, a process akin to bankruptcy, and is set to lay off 36 employees. With stores in Whitby, York, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock, and Shrewsbury, C W Sellors was a well-known name in the North of England and the Midlands.
The administration process began in January when Lee Causer and Ben Peterson from BDO, a business advisory firm, were appointed joint administrators. This move was prompted by the consolidation of all Whitby sites into a single W Hamond store, resulting in the closure of four other branches. But here's where it gets controversial: the administrators cited cash flow issues due to rising costs and the cost-of-living crisis, despite the company's investments in new facilities.
The business, which boasted a turnover of £28.5 million in April 2024, is now seeking a buyer. Lee Causer acknowledged the challenging trading conditions, including increased overheads and reduced demand for luxury items. As a result, the company had to make the difficult decision to let go of 36 employees immediately, retaining the remaining 50 to support the administrators during the transition.
C W Sellors was renowned for its exquisite jewelry and luxury watches, featuring exclusive brands and designers from across the globe. Their collections showcased diamond and gemstone pieces, including UK gemstones like Derbyshire Blue John and Whitby Jet. The retailer also offered prestigious brands such as IWC Schaffhausen, Breitling, TAG Heuer, Gucci, Longines, Montblanc, Oris, and Bremont. Additionally, they supplied the Company of Master Jewellers, a prominent industry body in the UK and Ireland.
As of now, the business continues to operate, but online orders are temporarily unavailable. Customers can still visit their stores in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Shrewsbury, Matlock, York, and Whitby for in-person purchases. The company has expressed gratitude for the support and understanding of its customers during this challenging period.
