Shark Attack Tragedy: Search for Missing Swimmer Erica Fox (2026)

A chilling tale of a missing swimmer, Erica Fox, has left the community of Pacific Grove, California, in a state of uncertainty and grief. The 55-year-old disappeared after a reported shark attack at Lovers Point, an incident that has sparked a desperate search effort.

Despite the official suspension of the search, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office dive team seized a window of opportunity to continue the hunt for Fox. With the assistance of Bedrock Ocean Exploration, a dedicated team based in Port Richmond, they conducted an extensive scan of the ocean floor using advanced technology.

"The MCSO Dive Team, alongside Bedrock Ocean Exploration, utilized side-scan sonar and an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) to map a substantial area of approximately 1,000 yards by 500 yards. Their efforts were focused on locating Fox, but unfortunately, she remained elusive," a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office explained.

Divers scoured the identified areas, but their search was fruitless. With stormy weather looming, the Sheriff's Office had no choice but to suspend further attempts.

Fox was part of the Kelp Krawlers, a weekly swimming group that frequents the area. Investigators revealed that the group entered the water as they always did, but around noon, a witness on the shore reported a large splash, prompting concern of a potential shark attack. All swimmers returned safely, except for Fox.

Two witnesses claimed Fox may have encountered a shark while swimming offshore near Lovers Point. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the first report came from a driver stopped at a stop sign, who witnessed a horrifying sight—a shark breaching the water with what appeared to be a human body in its jaws, only to submerge and disappear.

A fellow swimmer, acting as the second witness, realized Fox was missing after taking a headcount. The search was officially called off on Monday afternoon after an exhaustive 15-hour effort covering over 84 square nautical miles.

"This tragic incident has deeply affected the family, friends, and loved ones of Erica Fox. The Coast Guard extends its condolences and support during this difficult time," said Captain Jordan Baldueza, Commander of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco.

Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Monterey Fire Department, Seaside Fire, and CAL FIRE, joined forces in the response. Crews deployed rescue boats, drones, and helicopters to scour the water and the surrounding area for any sign of Fox.

As the search comes to a close, questions remain. What happened to Erica Fox? Was it truly a shark attack, or could there be another explanation? The mystery surrounding her disappearance continues to haunt the community, leaving a sense of unease and a desire for answers.
