November 30, 2024 10:05 Goodman Era Ending in Las Vegas:

Mob lawyer turned politician Oscar Goodman was elected mayor of Las Vegas and served three terms between 1999 to 2011. His wife Carolyn succeeded him as mayor in 2011 and served three terms herself, stretching the Goodman era to a full 25 years. Term limits have taken care of the rest and Carolyn Goodman's official last day as mayor will be on Wednesday. Shelly Berkley, who served Nevada's first congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1999 to 2013 and was defeated in her bid for the U.S. Senate In 2012, will replace the 85-year-old Goodman. Berkley will turn 74 in January.

November 30, 2024 08:33 Sick New World Festival Canceled:

Yesterday, the organizers of the third annual Sick New World one-day heavy-metal music festival called it off. The event at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds was supposed to take place on April 12, headlined by the likes of Metallica, Linkin Park, and Tomahawk; the press release blamed "unforeseen circumstances" for the cancellation. A story on Blabbermouth.net cited sources claiming that the enormous guarantees to the headliners, $5 million to Metallica alone, required that all 60,000 tickets be sold and only 20,000 had been bought up so far, far below last year's pace on the way to a sellout crowd.

November 29, 2024 14:16 LVA YouTube: Matt Bourie of Jackpot Gents:

This week's viog features Matt Bourie, son of Steve Bourie who produced and published the American Casino Guide for many many years. We're sure a lot of you remember the ACG, which covered every casino in the country, had articles on how to play the games, and featured a coupon section that competed, to a degree, with our Member Rewards Book. Of course, being friendly, we stayed out of each other's way and Anthony met Matt when he was in his early teens, roughly 25 years ago. In the YouTube, you can hear about how Matt learned to play video poker before he learned to drive, attended a Gamblers Anonymous meeting just before turning 21, and went into the family business, then how he and Steve posted the first how-to-play-slots video in 2009 (and garnered 10 million views), then pivoted from the ACG to become influencers with their Jackpot Gents YouTube channel. It's another interesting interview with a popular influencer who has a long background in the biz and more than 200,000 subscribers. Tune in!

November 27, 2024 13:35 Adele's Entire Residency Show on Vinyl:

If you missed Adele live at the Colosseum at Caesars, you can buy the commemorative box set featuring the entire 21-song setlist recorded at various performances during the 100 shows. Weekends with Adele Live In Las Vegas Limited Edition Vinyl Box Set comes with two hours of music and some of the between-song banter that the singer is known for on three actual vinyl LPs, along with a 56-page photo book in a fold-out box in the shape of the stage and a mini bag of confetti directly from the show. It's all yours for a low low $349, which has raised some eyebrows among critics and fans. But hey, the 36-year-old singer grossed a mere $200 million from the shows, not including merchandise, streaming rights and royalties, endorsement deals, licensing agreements, and who knows what else, and has announced a temporary hiatus from her career, so she probably needs the money to survive.

November 26, 2024 10:00 OYO Now Charging for Parking:

The situation at OYO is a bit confusing thus far, but all signs, including some in the casino, indicate that the E. Tropicana hotel-casino has implemented a parking fee. At last check, no gates were in place to enforce the charges and the OYO website still cites free parking, but according to theLas Vegas Review-Journal, the rates are $8 for the first three hours, then $20 per 24-hour period. So far, it appears that there's no grace period for locals and hotel guests are paying for parking. In addition, there's a 99-cent service fee, since you pay the freight on a parking-service's website. We'll run over there and see what we can find out in the next day or two.

November 25, 2024 13:03 Brutal Miss:

There’ve been many instances of players missing the deadline for football-contest submissions, but none that we know of that was this costly. With only 96 remaining in Circa Survivor going into Week 12 of the season, one entry didn’t submit a selection, which resulted in elimination. The equity value of the lost entry was about $149,000. Currently, 54 remain in the contest that has a winner-take-all prize of just under $14.3 million.

November 25, 2024 10:06 F1 Hype and Reality Check:

The Formula 1 hype generator is in full force. The normally sober Guardian published a paean that was intoxicated in its ovation; the F1 CEO was quoted as saying there's been "a turnaround in local sentiment.” A ChannelNewsAsia piece piles on the praise from the drivers, all of whom uttered variations on the theme expressed by seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, "The race is absolutely fantastic." We're still waiting to hear from the Wynn, MGM, and Caesars about the bottom-line results, but we doubt they'll be anything but superlative, even after room rates plummeted and crowd counts were down; the hold from international high-rolling F1 fans will no doubt enhance shareholder value. Then there's the reality check fromLVSportsBiz.com, in which local writer Alan Snel discusses the event that "divides Las Vegas like no other," required "months of aggravation, disruptions, and financial losses to local businesses on a disruptive scale never seen before," the bloated impact numbers, F1's attempt to shake down businesses with a view of the track, the county's half-million-dollar loss in handling F1’s event permits, "a sports promoter allowed to privatize the economic heart of a region so that a few high-end hotels could make more money than usual," and a headline that sums up the negative aspects of F1 succinctly: "County Commission Chairman Says Clark County Needs To Determine If Race Is Worth Months of Disruptions, Business Losses." And the beat goes on.

November 25, 2024 08:17 F1 Without a Ticket:

The managing editor of SFGate.com, the San Francisco-based news, culture, travel, and sports website that often covers Las Vegas, was on a mission over the weekend: She went down to center Strip to try and see the Grand Prix from any vantage point that didn't require paying up front. She found that "a battle of wills ensued that tested, and ultimately broke, the resolve of even a tightwad like me." It's worth the seven-or-so-minute read to get a look at the extensive, expensive, and somewhat absurd lengths to which F1, Vegas cops, and casino security go to protect this precious money machine. Be sure to click on the escalator video to glimpse the race from the ticketless hoi polloi point of view and finish the story for the surprise ending. Thanks to Canada Roy for sending the link.

November 24, 2024 16:43 SNF Eagles/Rams:

The Philadelphia Eagles are -3 favorites over the Los Angeles Rams in tonight’s Sunday Night Football game. The total is 48.5.

November 24, 2024 13:55 Teardown Begins:

The Las Vegas Grand Prix 2024 is in the record books and Las Vegas will start to return to "normal" this evening around 9 p.m., 18 hours or so after the completion of the race. As workers remove barriers, scaffolding for lights and cameras, grandstands, and other race infrastructure, lane restrictions will remain in place. One lane on the Strip will be open at all times (what a relief), with more opening along the route starting Wednesday at 9 p.m. in anticipation of the four-day Thanksgiving weekend. Lanes will then be restricted through December 6 from midnight till 9 a.m. Due to the dismantling of the Bellagio Fountain Club, two southbound Strip lanes will be closed from Flamingo to Bellagio Drive through December 27. The pedestrian overpasses along the course will be closed between midnight and 9 a.m. to remove the nuclear-blast-proof visibility barriers as follows: Dec. 2-4 Venetian/Sands and Planet Hollywood to Cosmopolitan; Dec. 5-6 and Dec. 9 Bellagio to Horseshoe and Harmon Shops to Harmon East. Koval at Flamingo will be impacted, including sidewalk closures, December 6 through the 20th for dismantling the temporary overpass.

November 24, 2024 10:11 DEA Ordered To Stop Airport Searches and Seizures:

According to an article in Reason magazine, the Justice Department has ordered the Drug Enforcement Administration "to suspend most searches of passengers at airports and other mass-transit hubs after an independent investigation found DEA task forces weren't documenting searches and weren't properly trained, creating a significant risk of constitutional violations and lawsuits." Though the story doesn't mention them, this is a big big deal for gamblers, especially professionals. Unless part of an existing criminal investigation, the narcs can no longer search passengers due to "significant concerns about how the DEA uses paid airline informants and loose criteria to flag passengers to search for drugs and cash"; the vast majority of seizures under civil asset forfeiture, usually based on the flimsiest of evidence, "aren't accompanied by criminal prosecutions." Instead, the DEA keeps the cash and the onus is on the owner of the money to recover it. The Justice Department's Office of Inspector General "found that the DEA paid one airline employee tens of thousands of dollars over the past several years in proceeds from cash seized as a result of tips" and seized more than $4 billion in cash from people suspected of drug activity between 2006 and 2016, while $3.2 billion of it was never connected to any criminal charges. If you want to read the whole sordid story of government overreach and law-enforcement corruption, you can here. We've covered the issue of running the DEA gauntlet at airports many times in Question of the Day and there's an entire chapter on it in our book The Law for Gamblers by Bob Nersesian.

November 24, 2024 08:10 Year-Round Activities at F1 HQ Revealed:

With just a few days to go until the second-annual Las Vegas Grand Prix, Formula 1 issued a press release detailing "year-round programming" at the company's Las Vegas headquarters, the 39-acre property known as Grand Prix Plaza at Harmon and Koval. The Plaza will "host three immersive experiences beginning in the spring." F1 Drive will be a 1,650-foot-long go-kart racetrack that "weaves in and out of the pit-building garages" and will incorporate a part of the actual circuit. F1 Hub will be a "collection of racing simulators," along with a restaurant and retail store. And F1 X will be the museum-like exhibit "detailing the world of Formula 1. Race fans can learn about the sport, teams, and cars, test their knowledge, construct their own F1 car, and virtually race down the Las Vegas Strip Circuit via 4D driving." The attractions will enable Formula 1 to engage with visitors and residents year-round.

November 22, 2024 08:08 RIP: Brad Scott:

Jean Scott's husband Brad passed away of natural causes on Sunday a couple of months short of his 93rd birthday. Brad was the rock whom Jean leaned on for pure and steadfast support as long as we've known her, the other half of their fairytale love story and life together. The ways in which they complemented each other would take a book to enumerate (and at one point, Jean actually started writing it, but she was afraid she'd never stop). We spent many manyhours with Brad, with and without Jean, and loved being with him for his great stories, huge heart, and accepting soul. But what always impressed us the most about Brad Scott was that when the going got tough, he just took a nap, then woke up refreshed and ready to take on the casinos and the world once again. We miss him already; we never won't. But he's at rest now, at home with the angels.

November 21, 2024 15:27 TNF Steelers/Browns:

November 21, 2024 10:13 Spirit Files for Bankruptcy:

Florida-based Spirit Airlines, which accounts for the second-most flights in and out of Reid International, has filed for bankruptcy protection from creditors. A story on CNN.com cites "mounting losses, unaffordable debt, increased competition for bargain-seeking airline passengers, and the inability to merge with other airlines" as the reasons Spirit had "little choice" but to file. Over the past several years, Spirit tried to merge with Frontier, then JetBlue when it made a more attractive takeover offer, but the merger was blocked by a federal judge on antitrust issues. “Guests can continue to book and fly without interruption and can use all tickets, credits, and loyalty points as normal,” Spirit said in a statement.

November 21, 2024 08:21 Stop the Presses: New Project Not Named for Famous Astronomer:

An article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal quotes a representative of the proposed LVXP project on the north Strip as denying that the property, if built, will be named after a 17th century Italian astronomer, physicist, mathematician, and engineer. Apparently, new renderings include signage on one of the buildings with the name "The Galileo." Whatever it's called, LVXP has its sights set on 2,605-unit hotel and condominium units in two towers, along with an 18,000-seat NBA-ready arena and a 6,000-seat theater. You can see the renderings of what some local pundits are calling the "fanciful" (as in imaginary) project here.

November 17, 2024 10:08 Strip Parking: A Cautionary Tale:

Yesterday, an out-of-state member drove to Mandalay Bay to check out the new Swingers miniature-golf attraction. Since he wasn't planning on actually playing, just checking out the venue and getting some pizza at the well-regarded Emmy Squared pizza/burger restaurant, he didn't think to check the booking schedule. He also forgot that on the weekends, parking at MGM properties is $23, up from $18 during the week. Anyway, he parked in the MBay garage, walked down to Swingers, and found that it was closed for the next five hours for a private party. Ruh roh. Locals get three hours of free parking, but visitors from out of state get zip, nary a nanosecond. So he was out $23 for five minutes of parking, didn't get to see Swingers, and was still hungry to boot. The moral of the story: Always check the schedule to make sure whatever attraction you'll have to pay to park at is actually open. And here's a post-script to the tale of woe. We attended the show Mavericks at the Plaza last night. (We liked it and will review it soon.) During one of her many monologues, the emcee, Miss Behave, waxed philosophical. "As we make our way through the world, we all want validation, right? No matter what we do in life, we thrive on recognition, affirmation, appreciation -- and free parking!" She went on to explain how to validate the show tickets to escape the charge for parking in the Plaza garage. And she summed up our sentiments, especially after hearing the member's story, with "Screw the Strip!"

November 17, 2024 08:25 Formula 1: That Few Spectators?:

LVSportsBiz.com reports that the special-event permit application by the Las Vegas Grand Prix submitted to Clark County estimates 102,000 spectators for the race. That compares to the "315,000 fans that F1 claimed attended last year’s inaugural race." However, LVSportsBiz adds a quote from an F1 spokesperson that she "believes last year’s number included how many guests collectively attended each of the three nights.” Meaning race organizers didn't differentiate unique visitors, instead counting the same people two or three times over the weekend. So it's hard to say how many people last year's race attracted, but assuming the vast majority of fans attended all three nights of race events, this year's estimate is off by only a few thousand. Otherwise, attendance is down by more than two-thirds, which is hard to imagine. We'll know better when the final results are announced.

November 16, 2024 08:20 Culinary Walks out on Virgin:

As announced last week, upwards of 700 Culinary Union housekeepers, porters, bell staff, waiters and waitresses, and bartenders went on strike yesterday at Virgin and round-the-clock picket lines have been set up outside the property. It couldn't come at a worse time for the hotel-casino, which has struggled to gain traction since it was purchased by Virgin in 2019 from Hard Rock, closed for a complete remodel, and reopened in March 2021 during the pandemic. In addition, Formula 1 is less than a week away. The dispute, which has been ongoing for nearly two years, 18 months of which have been without a contract, is over pay; management is now offering a raise of 30 cents per hour each year over the five-year contract, a concession from the previous offer of no raises until the fourth and fifth years of the agreement. Virgin is the last holdout from contract negotiations that were resolved all over Las Vegas at this time last year just before the inaugural race. It's the first open-ended strike in Las Vegas since 2002 when the union walked out on the Golden Gate; that strike lasted 10 days. The union pays $500 a week in strike wages to members who man the picket line five days a week during the labor stoppage.

November 14, 2024 08:38 Closed, Open, Closed for Good:

In September, Ocean One at the Miracle Mile Shops closed suddenly, then a day later reopened. Rumor had it that the restaurant known and loved hereabouts for its fantastic lunch specials were badly in arrears with the rent when it closed, then caught up and was able to reopen. Well, yesterday a sign went up on the door that thanked the Las Vegas community for "allowing us to serve you for the last 20 years" and that the lease had expired. "Stay tuned for details as we search for a new location." We'll definitely stay tuned to see if Ocean One resurfaces and what happens to the lunch specials if it does.

The fieldwork and reports are scheduled for completion by the end of the year and Brightline is expected to start laying track shortly thereafter. The rail line should be completed by 2028.

November 13, 2024 08:19 Sphere Losses Mount; New Venue Announced for UAE:

Sphere Entertainment Company announced third-quarter results on Monday with a loss of $125.1 million in July, August, and September. That compared to the $100 million loss in Q3 2023, though the venue was open for only two days, September 29 and 30, last year. In the earnings call, Sphere executives admitted to shortcomings in bookings, marketing, and sales, though hinted that a number of new shows are on the horizon. And speaking of the horizon, Sphere last week announced that a second version of the arena will be built in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates; it's slated to open in 2030.

November 12, 2024 10:03 Visuals Eliminated on Strip Pedestrian Bridges:

Last year's plastic screening that lined the pedestrian bridges over the Strip along the Formula 1 race route (and was torn down in a number of places by people) has turned into this year's aluminum siding, impenetrable without power tools. With more than two weeks to go before race weekend, the views over the Strip have been cancelled from three of the five bridges; the other two will be completed in a couple of days. Lane reductions are also in effect until the race. The Strip is reduced to one lane between midnight and noon, as is Sands Avenue. Koval will be closed completely between Harmon and Rochelle (near Ellis Island) starting on Saturday and continuing through November 25.

November 12, 2024 08:29 Only 105 Entries Remain in Circa Survivor:

In Week 10 of the NFL season (not including last night's game), 105 entries out of the initial 14,266 remain in the epic Circa Survivor football contest. Another 46 entries, representing 30% of the field, were knocked out after Thursday's and Sunday's games, with 30 entries knocked out by the Carolina Panthers beating the New York Giants, 14 by the Chicago Bears losing to the New England Patriots, and two when the New Orleans Saints beat the Atlanta Falcons. The expected value of the 105 entries left is now $135,866. Last year after Week 10, 609 entries remained; in 2022 there were 86 entries and 173 in 2021.

November 11, 2024 08:39 Nevada Not Great for Hobby Farming:

A survey conducted by LawnStarter.com has found that Nevada ranks in the bottom half of states when it comes to hobby farming (small-scale farms primarily for pleasure rather than business). Nevada placed number 33 overall, ranking #39 for land and environmental conditions, #42 for livestock and agricultural resources, and #31 for economic and market access. Which goes to show that there's no lower limit on topics about which some websites will survey and issue a press release or that we'll cover on an agonizingly slow Monday morning for news.

November 11, 2024 08:14 World's Highest-Paid Tournament-Poker Players:

The website PrimeCasino analyzed the player rankings at HendonMob.com, the "world's largest poker-player database," to determine the total (inflation-adjusted) earnings of tournament-poker players worldwide. The player with the most earnings is Bryn Kenney, a 38-year-old from Long Beach, New York; his first cash was in 2007 and since then, he's won $67 million. You can read about Kenney in our book The 50 Greatest Stories in Poker History. After Kenney are Jason Bonomo (U.S., $64.1 million), Stephen Chidwick (England, $59.2 million), Jason Koon (U.S., $58 million), and Mikita Bodyakovsky (Belarus, $55.6 million). Canadian Daniel Negreanu placed seventh ($53.9 million) and Erik Seidel 10th ($47 million). Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson, Sammy Farha, Tom Dwan, and other big-name players weren't even in the top ten. Which goes to show that Hendon Mob tracks live-poker tournament results only, not online poker or cash games, where the real money is. Six of the top ten tournament winners are American, with one each from Belarus, the UK, Canada, and Spain. The highest-earning woman tournament player is Vanessa Selbst, a 40-year-old native of Brooklyn with just under $12 million.

November 10, 2024 17:22 SNF Lions/Texans:

The Detroit Lions are -4 favorites over the Indianapolis Colts in tonight’s Sunday Night Football game. The total is 49.5.

November 10, 2024 10:21 Henderson Is Hot:

A good story on Islands.com titled, "Right Outside of Las Vegas Is a Quiet Artsy City Full of Charm, Shops, and Outdoor Adventures," gives good brief coverage of Las Vegas' next-door neighbor. It goes into Henderson's history -- petroglyphs, a company town, post-WWII decline -- then brings you up to date with its burgeoning population, art, retail, and hiking. And if you take the article's recommendations, be sure to check our blog posts by Bobby Vegas, a huge fan of the Rainbow Club and Emerald Island downtown casinos, which you can read abouthere, there, and everywhere.

November 10, 2024 08:13 B-52s Returning for Another Run:

The B-52s, the long-established new-wave group out of Athens, Georgia, will follow up sold-out 2022 three-show and 10-show residencies at the Venetian with another five shows in April. The band formed in 1976 with two male (now one) and two female singer-musicians, combining pop, rock, a heavy party vibe, and strangeness (best exemplified, perhaps, by their biggest hits, "Love Shack" and "Rock Lobster"), and has been going strong for nearly 50 years. The dates are: April 11, 12, 16, 18, and 19. Pre-sale tickets go on sale Thursday, the general-public on Friday, both at 10 a.m. PT.

November 09, 2024 12:48 Culinary Announces Virgin Strike Starting Friday:

Culinary Union Local 226 has called a strike of its 700 members at Virgin Las Vegas starting Friday November 15, less than a week before the Formula 1 parade rolls into town. It's the second strike in six months; the first in May took place only over one weekend. For this strike, an ongoing work stoppage and round-the-clock picket lines are planned until contract negotiations are resolved. The union has been without a labor agreement for the past 18 months and claims that Virgin management has offered $0 in raises over the next five years, while Virgin counters that the union "didn't allow employees to vote on a June proposal and that the company has been awaiting responses to a number of offers put forward since July." No negotiations are scheduled between now and the strike, but that could change over the next week.

November 09, 2024 10:30 Neon City Festival Debuts over F1 Weekend:

The Neon City Festival is being touted as downtown's "alternative to Formula 1." The inaugural version of what promises to be an annual event will take place over race weekend, Nov. 22-24, with free multi-genre concerts, along with food trucks and pop-up restaurants, plus fireworks at 9:45 p.m. all three nights. The headliners include the Neon Trees, Troyboi, All-American Rejects, Seven Lions, Alison Wonderland, and Russell Dickerson and with another three dozen acts lined up for the three Fremont Street Experience stages, it looks like the entertainment will be essentially non-stop. The festival is free and for all ages, there won't be any street or lane closures, and it's yet another reminder that the Strip and downtown are world's apart.

November 09, 2024 07:48 All Net Arena 2.0:

8NewsNow.com has a story on the new project that's apparently under way on the site of the former Wet 'n' Wild between the Sahara and Fontainebleau. The 27-acre lot north Strip lot has been vacant since the water park closed exactly 20 years ago and was slated for an NBA arena for 10 of them, until that plan died a prolonged death. The new plan seems to be moving along. The local developer announced that it had acquired the land in April, having resolved a number of liens associated with it. A month later, they hired the Las Vegas-based Steelman Partners architectural firm known for designing hotel-casinos. Now, they've released renderings and a floor plan of the project, tentatively named LVXP. Among the three towers is one that's touted as the city's tallest at 752 feet, 17 feet taller than Fontainebleau; the plans call for 2,500 hotel rooms and condos. Also included are an 18,000-square-foot "NBA-ready" arena, a 6,000-seat theater, a 120,000-square-foot convention area, and underground parking, but no casino so far. LVXP will require approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and the Clark County Commission; county staff has already recommended approval. When (not if) LVXP is green lighted, construction could start as early as the first quarter of 2025 and finish sometime in 2029, pending financing, which hasn't been revealed as yet. You can see the renderings here.

November 08, 2024 07:47 Lee Canyon Opens:

Lee Canyon, the ski resort on the slops of Mt. Charleston 50 miles from downtown, opened a few days ago to kick off its 60th-anniversary season. Yes, it's a few weeks earlier than the usual start date around Thanksgiving and the earliest the resort has opened in 13 years, but the nice cold snap ushered in by November has allowed the snow-making team to cover and groom the two beginner slopes. Snow-making continues nightly, putting down a base a foot deep over an entire acre of an evening.

November 07, 2024 08:39 In the End: Odds vs. Polls:

At least over the past three presidential elections, the betting markets told the tale, while most of the political polls got it wrong. We'll leave the post-mortems about bias to the pundits, but most of the major polls, including those conducted byThe New York Times, FiveThirtyEight/Nate Silver, and HarrisX/Forbes, predicted a Harris win by a thin margin, while Ipsos and the Economist gave her a larger edge at 56%. The largest was predicted by the CNN poll at 70%. The betting markets were opposite. Trump was a consistent favorite, dipping briefly into dog territory after his debate with Harris, but flipping back to the forefront at odds between -145 and -168 in the runup, then rising into the stratosphere on Election Day: -225 by the time the first polls closed, -320 an hour later, then -2500 (BetMGM in Ontario) by 8 p.m. Eastern. It seems to be common sense that looking at the two different models, gamblers putting their money -- and sometimes big money -- where their beliefs are trumps, so to speak, surveying thousands of randomly selected citizens online or over the phone with an interviewer.

November 06, 2024 08:08 Houses Down, Condos Way Up:

The median price for a single-family house in Las Vegas dropped around 1% in October, falling from just under $480,000 to $475,531. Condos and townhomes, however, set a new all-time record; the median price in October was $315,000, up nearly 15% year over year and a full $15,000 more than the previous record of $299,500, set in September.

November 05, 2024 10:17 F1 Discounting Tickets:

Empty race spots, anyone? Las Vegas Grand Prix is offering discounted three-day and one-day passes to the Formula 1 events. First announced early last week were three days on the West Harmon Zone for $672, regularly $1,200, a 44% discount. As of Friday, one-day tickets are as low as $99 (for the Flamingo Zone on Thursday night) and $300, $325, and $350 for the Flamingo, T-Mobile, and Heineken zones for the race itself on Saturday night. These are general-admission tickets, meaning standing only and no food and beverage. With the race a little more than two weeks away, these "bargain-basement" admission prices might could probably indicate a surplus of spectator space.

November 05, 2024 08:12 October Hottest on Record:

October kept a string of heat records alive here. The month was the hottest in the past 86 years, since records began being kept. The average temperature hit 76.5 degrees, which beat the previous record of 75.3 degrees set in 2003. And it was way above the average temperature for the month: 70.4 degrees. Another record was broken when the thermometer hit 100 degrees on October 6, the latest day of the year to record triple digits since 1937.

November 05, 2024 08:03 Presidential Line:

With the presidential election taking place today, the line is Trump -185/Harris +165 at offshore books. The line has moved in both directions more than any other election we’ve monitored. Trump was as high as -205 last week, then fell precipitously to -125 during the weekend, before this rebound. We’ll post updates today if warranted.

November 04, 2024 10:22 Nevada Still Fourth for Highest Alcohol Consumption:

This year's study by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism ranked Nevada number four for the most alcohol consumed per capita (2022) in the U.S. at 3.66 gallons per year. Nevada's standing is the same as last year, but the Institute's statistics, collected over the past 45 years, show that consumption has dropped steadily. The peak was in 1977 at 6.32 gallons, the low in 2009 at 3.21. This year, Delaware came in first, trading places with New Hampshire at second, followed by Washington, D.C., Nevada, and Montana. It should be noted that, like New Hampshire, Nevada's visitor volume no doubt contributes to the number of gallons attributed to residents. Not surprisingly, Utah, which has the most stringent alcohol laws nationwide, placed last (1.36 gallons). Nationwide, Americans drank nearly eight billion gallons of alcohol in 2022, of which beer accounted for roughly 6.4 billion, followed by wine (931 million) and hard alcohol (635 gallons).

November 03, 2024 09:56 LVA YouTube: Vegas Matt and Company:

"Vegas Matt" is the world's biggest gambling influencer with more than 800,000 subscribers. He and his team post every single day, which they can do, since they're out and about in Vegas gambling every single day. Matt, his son EJ, and his gambling and business partner WBG sat down with Anthony and Andrew last week and the hour-long discussion gives you a rare and completely transparent look into the world of casino influencers. Matt retired to Vegas and quickly learned what he was doing wrong as a gambler. When he hit a major dealt royal, he and WBG videotaped it; Matt's son posted it on TikTok and it quickly received 80,000 views. Realizing they were onto something, they kept playing and posting and eventually migrated to YouTube. In the wide-ranging interview, they talk about monetizing the show, the father-son dynamic, writing off losses, comps, tipping, the algorithms, and the Big Question: Why do people watch? Quite a discourse and we guarantee you'll come away with a new understanding of the puzzling influencer phenomenon.

November 03, 2024 08:10 Netflix Popup Restaurant Coming to MGM Grand:

EaterVegas reports that a “one-of-a-kind restaurant experience offering guests a savory journey” will operate for around a year at MGM Grand in the space previously occupied by the Avenue Cafe. Based on Netflix programming, the tentatively named Netflix Bites is scheduled to open early next year; otherwise, it's undescribed and unmenued. We're hoping for some combination of "Bridgerton," "House of Cards," and "The Queen's Gambit," though we could do without "The Jeffrey Dahmer Story." MGM is no stranger to Netflix spinoffs; Chef Truck at Park MGM, which we reviewed in May, is a direct descendent of the eponymous movie and Netflix's "Chef Show."

November 02, 2024 08:18 Mystere Street:

It’s not often that a street name gets changed on the Strip, but one just has. Of course, it helps when the street, or in this case a casino entryway, is privately owned, as this one is by Treasure Island. The former Siren’s Cove Blvd. is now Mystere Dreams Ave. (complete with a street sign and everything). The “avenue” is the main entrance to the casino.

This is an excellent play with a chance to win $100,000 without risking a dime. If you have a players card, you’ll qualify for a second chance drawing for $100 in free-play.
